EMDR Therapy
EMDR Therapy in Liverpool & Online
Some experiences don't fade the way others do. A memory can still feel raw years later. Your body reacts before you've had time to think, or you find yourself stuck in the same patterns of anxiety without knowing why. EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help your brain process those experiences, so they lose their grip on the present.
I'm Joanne Janvier, a BACP-registered integrative therapist, fully trained in EMDR. I'm based in Liverpool and work with clients online across the UK.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It uses bilateral stimulation (following movement with your eyes, or alternating taps) while you briefly focus on a difficult memory. This helps the brain reprocess the memory so it can be stored as something that happened in the past, rather than something that still feels like it's happening now.
EMDR is recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
What can EMDR help with?
-
Trauma, whether a single event or experiences that built up over time
-
PTSD and complex PTSD
-
Anxiety and panic that seem out of proportion or come "out of nowhere"
-
Distressing memories, flashbacks or nightmares
-
Childhood experiences that still shape how you feel about yourself
-
Phobias and specific fears
How does online EMDR work?
Sessions take place by secure video call from somewhere private and comfortable to you. Bilateral stimulation can be done on screen or with self-tapping, and I'll guide you through each step.
We never go straight into difficult memories. The early sessions focus on getting to know you, understanding what you'd like to change, and building the skills you need to feel steady and in control. Processing only begins when you feel ready.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you bring. A single distressing event may need fewer sessions, while longer-standing or complex trauma usually needs more time. We'll review progress together regularly, so you always know where you are.
Is EMDR right for me?
The best way to find out is a free initial chat. We'll talk about what's going on for you, whether EMDR is a good fit or whether another approach would suit you better, and you can ask anything you like before deciding.
Sessions from £45. Weekday and some evening appointments available.
If you are in crisis or at risk of harm, please contact your GP, call NHS 111, or call Samaritans on 116 123. Therapy is not an emergency service.
